My Best Friend’s Wedding

Tone described: A fun and charming confection, so much so that the protagonist’s awful tricks don’t infect it with gall. But there’s a bittersweet taste at times. 

Tone illustrated: The fun and charm reach a high point when George leads the wedding party in a spontaneous singalong of “Say a Little Prayer.” Whenever Julianne and Michael are alone together, there is a touch of bittersweet, a love that may not be fulfilled. 

Theme: We often don’t know what we want until we lose it.  

A moment that illustrates the theme: After the wedding, Julianne gives Michael and Kimmy the song that belonged to Julianne and Michael, and we see Julianne’s pain at letting go of a guy she acted on too late.
