Mentorship

It’s wonderful to have a mentor in any field, to guide and advise you with experienced eyes. However, we’re not all so lucky to fall in with the perfect mentor.

With a Gotham Mentorship, you’ll be matched with an experienced writer (in your form of writing) who will take you under their wing and help you realize your project goals, through inspiration, advice, assignments, and critique. You buy a block of hours, which are used in a variety of ways as you and your mentor see fit, over time.

The Mentorship is for people who have taken a Gotham 10-Week Workshop class, or the equivalent elsewhere. And the Mentorship should be focused on a writing project (novel, short story, memoir, screenplay, etc.), though it’s fine if the project if far from complete.

Whereas Doctoring gives you direct feedback on a project, the Mentorship takes more of a scenic route, immersing you in a customized journey to deepen your understanding of the project. If direct feedback is your main goal, Doctoring is best for you; you don’t want to use the bulk of your Mentorship hours on feedback.

To begin, fill out the form at the bottom of the page. Then a Gotham staff member will consult with you to get a sense of what you're looking for in a mentor. Next, you’ll be matched with an appropriate writer.

Moving forward, the assigned mentor will talk with you about your project, assess your needs, work with you to devise a game-plan, and steer you in the development of that project. You'll get multidimensional support from someone who knows the writing life and will come to know you.
