Dear Gotham,
A million people will tell you it can’t be done. There are too many books and too many authors out there and how could what you have to say possibly make it through all that noise. Well, for me— with my memoir about to be published on January 16, 2024 by Blackstone Publishing— a large part of what got me there was the work I did with Gotham Writers.
They set me up with two remarkable mentors who never suggested I compromise my work in order to get it published, but instead worked intimately with me to hone and craft my message in ways that got it heard. Alex Steele, Gotham’s President, is inspirationally hands on in the mechanizations of the instruction, and was astute in suggesting two women he assured me would understand what I was trying to do. He was right and I am eternally grateful for their guidance.
I hope you’ll check out the end result which has already garnished praise from Publisher’s Weekly, Kirkus, and an impressive list of musicians like Kate Pierson from the B52’s and Nick Zinner from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs!
The Ballad of Speedball Baby, a memoir.
Cheers,
Ali Smith
