You should not... think that a formula - like children finding treasure - or a message, however worthy - like a bear learning to make friends with other bears - is quite sufficient for the purpose, perfectly okay, and sure to find a publisher. Maybe it will. But it will not be literature. And the children who read it will be defrauded, as if they were being fed on skim milk.Aiken does a great job - and I'm saying this with gratitude - of explaining how and why not to write for children, or maybe even why not to write fiction at all:
If you don't really enjoy writing, and are just doing it for the extra income you hope it will bring, now is the time to abandon the whole project and turn to some other source of revenue. If you are capable of facing your writing abilities and motivations critically, or have a gut feeling that The Artist's Way was a huge fat lie, or really want to learn how to write for children, this is a book for you. For if you dare to read on, Aiken explains many mechanisms, explains what works and what doesn't, explains the whys behind the dos and don'ts, and shares very practical, actionable advice. Also, it seems like she had a ball writing this book, and I loved every moment of having my dreams shattered by her.

If you enjoy describing, you are an essayist; if the well-turned phrase gives you pleasure, you may be a poet; but if what interests you is situations, and the actions and behaviour of people in those situations, then you are a story-teller.
