Roy Peter Clark
46 books330 followersBy many accounts, Roy Peter Clark is America's writing coach, a teacher devoted to creating a nation of writers. A Google search on his name reveals an astonishing web of influence, not just in the United States, but also around the world. His work has erased many boundaries. A Ph.D. in medieval literature, he is widely considered one of the most influential writing teachers in the rough-and-tumble world of newspaper journalism. With a deep background in traditional media, his work has illuminated, on the Internet, the discussion of writing. He has gained fame by teaching writing to children, and he has nurtured Pulitzer Prize-winning writers such as Thomas French and Diana Sugg. He is a teacher who writes, and a writer who teaches. That combination gives his most recent book, Writing Tools, a special credibility.
More credibility comes from Clark's long service at The Poynter Institute. Clark has worked full-time at Poynter since 1979 as director of the writing center, dean of the faculty, senior scholar and vice president.

لهذا الكتاب أهمية خاصة. فبعد صدور "لماذا نكتب" و"الزن في فن الكتابة"، صرنا أكثر مقدرة على الحديث عن الكتابة بصفتها صنعة، ومناقشة أدواتها بصفتها احتمالات متاحة أمام الكاتب، ينبغي عليه أن يختار منها ما يتوافق مع نصّه وفق شروطه الفنية. أعتقد بأن الكتب العربية التي تتناول هذا الموضوع نادرة جدًا، وكثير منها يسطّح المعالجة أكثر مما يجب. روي بيتر كلارك يستنبط أدواته من النموذج ولا يسقط النموذج على أدواته. إن الأدب هو دائمًا سابق على التنظير في الأدب، ولكن هذا لا يلغي الأهمية البالغة لكتابٍ مثل هذا، إذ من شأنه أن يختصر على الكاتب سنوات وسنوات من التجربة والخطأ.
هذا ليس كتابًا تقرأه من الغلاف إلى الغلاف. إنه كتابك طوال السنة، ويمكنك أن تخصص لكل أداة أسبوعًا، لاسيما مع وجود تمارين ينهي بها كلارك كل فصل بما يجعل استفادتك من المحتوى أعمق. إنه مادة ممتازة للمهتمين بتقديم ورش العمل في الكتابة الإبداعية، وما أحبه في هذا الكتاب هو شموليته، فهو يبدأ من مستوى "مايكرو".. من الكلمة والجملة والفقرة، وحتى مستوى ميتافيزيقي يتعلق بخلق التأثير والمعنى. قسّمت فصوله وفق هذا الترتيب الذي أجده بالغ المنطقية؛ صواميل ومسامير، مؤثرات خاصة، المخططات، وأخيرًا عادات مفيدة.
أنوه وحسب بأن النسخة الإنجليزية من الكتاب تتضمن 50 أداةً، في حين النسخة العربية تضم 49 أداة فقط، وذلك لأن إحدى الأدوات كانت تتعلق بتوظيف الماضي المستمر (v+ing) وهو ما لا نجد له رديفًا في اللغة العربية.

كتاب جيّد، مفيد إذا ما فهم كأدوات لا كقواعد وقوانين.
يستحقّ هذا الكتاب أن يُعرّب لا أن يترجم! وأقصد بذلك أن يتمّ إعادة إنتاجه من قبل أحد الكتاب "الإبداعيين" بأمثلةٍ عربية. لأنّها ستكون أبلغ في أثرها، وأوضح في بيانها.
استفدتُ منه بضعة أفكار عملية، وأظنّ أنّ غيري سيجد فيه أكثر من ذلك أو أقلّ، كلّ حسب احتياجه والأداة التي تهمّه أو تنقصه.

Before Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer became an actual book, the tools were a series of blog posts Roy Peter Clark wrote over at Poynter.org. The version I've read were those original 50 blog posts collected in PDF form. You can find all the original collected posts here and if you want to you can download the PDF from my Dropbox folder here.
From what you can see on the actual book's table of contents there are some differences from the the names of the tools and how it's divided by parts, but it's still the same basic 50 tips. It takes you from the basics of grammar, to the more advance story telling techniques like "saving string" and "foreshadowing". It's a writing exercise book. Every tool ends with a "Workbench" section which are a series of suggestions to practice what you just learned.
I highly recommend it if you want to improve your writing. Here's a great review from Snarkmarket if you still need more convincing.

I am an international student who had never been surrounded by native English speakers until the age of 22. I ended up studying humanities in an American phd program. Imagine how stressful writing is for someone like me. I have been struggling to acquire the instinct and intuition you guys have when you judge "good" and "bad" writings. This book is helping me a lot understand, step by step, what constitutes good English sentences, paragraphs and chapters. The examples are brilliant. They not only show what good sentences look like, but also let you experience the thinking process of editors.

This was a very fine book on writing. Some really shrewd wisdom in this thing. One of my favorites is this: Choose words the average writer avoids but the average reader understands. Rarely used words are not the same thing as unknown words.

تبادر لذهني لو أنها مجموعة من القواعد يلزم اتباعها لكان الأمر شديد التعقيد والصرامة...ولكانت العلاقة بين تلك القواعد والكاتب مساراً أحادياً كما لو كان موجهاً لمكان واحد..والإخفاق في الوصول اليه يعني التسليم للفشل في أن تصبح كاتباً..
لكن تخيل معي أنك أمام طاولة كتابية تحفل بالأدوات التي تكفل لك استراتيجية الكتابة ، عليك أن تملك هدفاً ..فكرة ما..ومن ثم مخططاً لتنفيذها بتناول تلك الأدوات ببراعة وتوظفها بذكاء لتتقن حرفة الكتابة ...
عملية الكتابة ضربٌ من نظرة إستثنائية للواقع، تسافر بحواسك وعقلك في عالم الخيال ، ما أن تتساقط الأفكار على الصفحة البيضاء فتغدو نهراً من الكلمات حتى تنعكس على صفحته جزءاً من عالمنا وذواتنا ...وهذة هي مهمة الكتابة الحقيقية...
لو أن هنالك رسالة ما سوى معرفة ادوات الكتابة سيكون لك أنت كقارىء كيف يمكنك التحدث عن الكتب بعد ان تقضي وقتاً في التحدث معها...
ستدرك كم أن الكتابة مهمة صعبة وجادة تلزم الكثير من النظام والالتزام ، كما أن الكاتب البارع الذي يحرص على الانتقائية والمثابرة، يبحث منقباً في المصادر ، الوثائق ، والمشاهد عن كل ما يصقل النص يصبح جديراً بأن نُبدي ثناءنا واحترامنا لما بذله من مجهود لتحقيق ذلك ، فهو ينتظر منا أن نضع ذلك بعين الاعتبار قبل أن نُطلق حكمنا بشأن العمل نفسه...هذا لا يمنع من ان نصرح بنقد أي موضع قد خذلنا وخالف توقعاتنا....
وعلى ما يبدو أن هنالك صوت يتردد بداخل الكاتب يُملي عليه كيف يمكنه أن يتبع استراتيجية الكتابة ، صدى ذلك الصوت هو التأثير عليك أنت كقارىء..كيفما كانت نغمات ذلك الصوت وايقاعها ، قد تبدو متناغمة متسقة لأحدهم ، شاذة لامألوفة لدى الآخر...
اختلاف وقع ذاك الصدى هو من يدفع بالكاتب للتعلم من أخطاءه والتخلص من نقاط الضعف والتركيز على نقاط القوة في اعماله المقبلة...

All these tools. They feel like rules. Every time I write I'm afraid of doing something wrong?
But isn't this book about rules?

Where do I get my ideas from?
What is the difference writing and revising?

As the title states, in this book you will find 50 writing tools. They are divided into four sections: Nuts and Bolts (word, sentence, and paragraph)... Special Effects (economy, clarity, originality, and persuasion)... Blueprints (organization, story building, and reports)... and Useful Habits (productive writing).
I'm curious about writing. About the magic of it. How do they make their words sound so smooth? I want to know the inner mechanics. Is it a science or an art? Can I actually learn to write like the authors I love? I've always struggled with writing. My words always seems so boring, technical. Can I become a better writer?
Yes. Life has taught us that to improve any learned skill we need the right information and enough practice. Reading this book felt like I was reading a book of secrets. Why didn't they teach us this in college? I recently read The Book on Writing: The Ultimate Guide to Writing Well. Combined with this book, I really feel like my writing has improved. Granted, I need ample more practice, but writing feels easier. This book was well worth my time and money. Great author. Great tools. Highly recommended.

Highly recommend for anyone who wants inspiration & splendidly helpful tools for polishing your writing! It even has sections for dealing with that nagging critic in our heads and how to handle negative criticism from others.

لانها بطريقه ما مُنتقاه أو في نوع من الفائدة ولو كانت مجرد تسليط الضوء على نقاط ما ممكن أكون عرفتها قبل كده

ابالنسبه للكتاب ده - أول جزء شعرت انه محتاج تركييز - في الأجزاء الأخرى دونت بعض الملاحظات

Clark's book is about more about style than content or correctness. And the 50 strategies are so practical, readable, entertaining, and genuinely helpful that writing with “style” becomes just as substantial and reachable a goal as writing good content with correctness.
That's fantastic. The book gets the fifth star, though, for its outstanding structure/organization. Clark has built this book like a fractal image: Its pattern and value is the same from far as from near, and it’ll make you a better writer in 50 ways, no matter how closely you examine it:
It takes *5 minutes* to read the table of contents—each item of which is a complete piece of instruction. (“Begin sentences with subjects and verbs”… “Cut big, then small”… “Seek original images”… “Build your work around a key question”… Turn procrastination into rehearsal”)
Double the value by flipping through and reading each chapter’s subtitle, too (*15 minutes*). (“Watch those adverbs: Use them to change the meaning of the verb”… “Let punctuation control pace and space: Learn the rules, but realize you have more options than you think”… “Learn the difference between reports and stories: Use one to render information, the other to render experience”)
If you have *a couple of hours*, read through the first few paragraphs of each chapter. Clark explains each strategy and includes one or two examples right up front.
If you have *a couple of weeks*, read the entire book, three or four chapters a day. Each chapter builds from explanation and example to a fuller discussion of the importance and effects that using each strategy has.
And if you have *several months*, dive into the workshop ideas at the end of each chapter. These are tremendously balanced—between prompts to reflect and to act, between analysis of others’ writing and my own, between my past writing, and my present and future writing; between simple/brief activities and complex/time-consuming ones. Not every workshop activity seems equally fruitful to me (how could they?), but there will be something productive here for any writer at any time.
This is the kind of writing book I’d buy to send off to college with my kids, regardless of their majors.

It takes *5 minutes* to read the table of contents—each item of which is a complete piece of instruction. (“Begin sentences with subjects and verbs”… “Cut big, then small”… “Seek original images”… “Build your work around a key question”… Turn procrastination into rehearsal”)
Double the value by flipping through and reading each chapter’s subtitle, too (*15 minutes*). (“Watch those adverbs: Use them to change the meaning of the verb”… “Let punctuation control pace and space: Learn the rules, but realize you have more options than you think”… “Learn the difference between reports and stories: Use one to render information, the other to render experience”)
If you have *a couple of hours*, read through the first few paragraphs of each chapter. Clark explains each strategy and includes one or two examples right up front.
If you have *a couple of weeks*, read the entire book, three or four chapters a day. Each chapter builds from explanation and example to a fuller discussion of the importance and effects that using each strategy has.
And if you have *several months*, dive into the workshop ideas at the end of each chapter. These are tremendously balanced—between prompts to reflect and to act, between analysis of others’ writing and my own, between my past writing, and my present and future writing; between simple/brief activities and complex/time-consuming ones. Not every workshop activity seems equally fruitful to me (how could they?), but there will be something productive here for any writer at any time.
This is the kind of writing book I’d buy to send off to college with my kids, regardless of their majors.

قليلة هي الكتب التي تضع منهاجًا كاملًا للكتابة بهذه الطريقة المُبسّطة، مثلما فعل روي كلارك في هذا الكتاب - أدوات الكتابة.
اختار روي الطريقة الأفضل في تقديم الكتاب، وذلك بتقسيم مواضيعها إلى فصول قصيرة يستطيع القارئ معها أن ينتهي من قراءة فصل في مدة تتراوح ما بين عشر دقائق أو عشرون دقيقة بحد أقصى. (باستثناء التمارين).
الكتاب غنيّ جدًا في تعريف فن الكتابة للكُتّاب سواء المبتدئ منهم أو لا. وبذلك فهو يضع نظام متكامل لعملية الكتابة لتضمن نتاج قوي.
لكن للأسف كانت بعض الفصول خاصة المتعلقة بالبناء السردي، والعلامات، و الأساليب، جاءت مُبهمة غير مفهومة، فهي لا تُلائم تراكيب الجمل في لغتنا العربية، ولا تُشابه أساليبها، فجاءت باهتة غير قادرة على إيضاح المعنى اللازم شرحه ليكون إسقاطًا على الكتابة باللغة العربية.
أعتقد أن النصف الأول من الكتاب تقريباً، خاصة الجزء الأول - صواميل ومسامير، وبعض فصول الحزء الثاني - مؤثرات خاصة، كان يجب أن يتم تعريبها وليس ترجمتها.
أما أكثر ما استمتعت به في الكتاب كان الجزء الثالث - المُخطّطات، فصوله جدًا مفيدة، ليس فقط للعمل الروائي، وإنما لأي أسلوب كتابي على الإطلاق. استفدتِ بأدوات مثل توليد الإثارة في النص، طرق التكرار، الكتابة من زوايا مختلفة، تحضير التقارير قبل الكتابة، التمهيد للأحداث حتى في النصوص القصيرة بل حتى في المقال.
ساعدني الجزء الرابع في وضع خططًا مستقبلية لعاداتي، فالجزء الرابع - عادات مفيدة، تحدّث عن عادات هامة للاستمرار في تطوير أسلوب الكتابة، ولعل أهمها على الإطلاق في رأيي هو كيفية التعلّم من ناقديك.
الكتاب مهم جدًا، وأرى أن نصفه الثاني أفضل بكثير من الأول، وليس ذلك بسبب الترجمة، بل لأن المواضيع تختص باللغة الإنجليزية.

This writing guide was actually inspiring. I would highly recommend all aspiring writers to read it. He provides good, simple exercises at the end of each chapter, which I did not do. It may be worth a second read, but a little more slowly next time, and to perform the exercises to train my mind how to see the things he's saying not to do as I'm reading, or even as I'm working on my own writing projects. Most assignments are to scour the newspapers or read certain books. You will learn what bores you to death and why.
From now on, I will read news articles, novels and nonfiction now with some extra tools in my toolbox. I usually don't even pay attention to whether or not a sentence is a good sentence or bad sentence until I come across one that throws me off. Maybe words were ackwardly twisted around or the punctuation was off. Then, and only then, will it grab my attention. Facebook news is usually where I find journalists are constantly repeating themselves, lengthening the article, and wasting everyones time. Maybe it's because they don't really have anything else to say on the subject, or they are trying to beat everyone else on getting the news out that they aren't taking the time to organize their thoughts and write a good piece. I definitely could learn from them what not to do as a writer.
He provides loads of simple tips for writing and organization, and provides plenty of examples from other writers in all genres. If you're like me, you are going to want to tag some of his many references to read again later on.

This book is essential reading for every beginning writer. Roy Clark provides the writer fifty tools with which to improve her craft. The chapters are short, informative, and funny and written in a style to illustrate a particular tool. He also provides brief exercises at the end of each chapter—not just writing, but cool exercises like observing people—to spur your thinking or to help increase your understanding.
The passage that resonated with me was his advice to not implement everything in this book all at once; he used the analogy of a golfer trying to incorporate all the advice he receives into a single swing. It will drive you crazy.
I recommend this book for every writer’s tool box (I would have added “highly” before “recommend,” but I no longer use adverbs).

I really enjoyed this book. Clark gives the writer a toolbox of ideas that range from how to arrange sentences to foreshadowing to working with an editor. All the chapters are short with questions at the end to spur further thought. He arranges the material well so the reader can easily reference a portion of the book later. He demystifies the writing process, as well. The reader leaves believing that he can write well if he takes the time and uses the right tools. Writing tools is an excellent resource for anyone who aspires to write well.
Read this in 2016 and again in 2025. Still a great book. I wish one of his later sections he moved earlier in the book. But other than that, no real complaints. A great introduction to how to write.

Roy Peter Clark does a phenomenal job breaking down the techniques of writing into 50 key strategies. He provides literary examples to demonstrate the techniques and closes each chapter with practical suggestions.
Each chapter is bite-size, snackable content that got my writing wheels turning. The headers and taglines are memorable and I found myself writing notes in the margin and highlighting a lot of the book.
Clark's analogies stand out---comma is a speed bump; semi-colon is a rolling stop; colon is a flashing yellow light, etc. The narrative line is like a train ride with occasional whistle stops.
I highly recommend Writing Tools!

الكتاب ممتاز في بابه، موجز ويعطي الأدوات على شكل نقاط ويشرح كل نقطع على حده، ومع كل أداة هناك ورشة عمل تطبيقية تفعيلية للأداة، الكتاب حتماً يحتاج مني قراءة ثانية، بعد فترة من الكتابة، حتى يتسنى لي الاستفادة من هذه الأدوات فعلا.
علماً أن هذا الكتاب قراته متمماً لثلاثية الكتابة : الزن في فن الكتابة , لماذا نكتب , وكتابنا هذا.
والفائدة عظيمة ولكن أكثر ما أحببت هو كتاب لماذا نكتب.
شعرت أنه مرتبط بالكتاب أكثر وأكثر بساطة وواقعية، ويثير حماسة المرء ليشرع في الكتابة.

Not what I had hoped for
In his Introduction to Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer, Roy Peter Clark talks down the whole idea of the "writer's struggle." He thinks writing should be easy and fun, and writer's block a thing that should not happen. OK, that works for me. I'm an old fart -- I've been reading all my life and writing most of it. I was a scientist, and let me tell you, an academic scientist does a LOT of writing. I have never had a serious problem with writer's block. It's not that it never happens, but I have found strategies to get out of it or bypass it, and they work. To my surprise, Part Four, "Useful Habits," of Writing Tools was, in large part, a list of exactly those strategies of mine.
That was what I found over and over: Clark gives good advice that I don't need, because I already do it. This even turns out to be true of advice I thought I wasn't following. For instance, Clark's Tool 15 is "Pay attention to names." I read that and thought to myself, "I don't do that, do I?" As it happens I recently wrote four bits of prose for creative writing classes I'm enrolled in. So I looked at those, and these are the names I had invented: Flash Harry, Yuki (from Japanese 雪, snow), Barra, (from 薔薇, rose), The Adversary, The Advocate, Eukosmos (from Greek "good world"), Asch (from Aschenputtel), Charlotte, and Anne. So, yeah, I do that.
This was a bit disappointing, because what I really hoped for was new strategies for writing well. What I got instead was a list of good ideas I already practice. For me it is intuitive -- Clark makes it explicit. As a mathematician I believe in the value of making the intuitive explicit. Thus Writing Tools is useful, but not in the way I had hoped.

This book has many good suggestions and reminders. Part One, Nuts and Bolts, and Part Two, Special Effects, are strong; the second half of the book is less so and I can't say why.
The line between good writing technique and manipulation is an interesting question. Clark does not discuss this. When I read a book like this - there are many - it's really about only one type of writing. It's about how to entertain the reader. And that's why these books and the writing of those who follow their advice have a good amount of sameness to them, as if they have all been to the same writing school. It's about being peppy, clever and engaging. But many times it feels as though it's the writing itself - the style of writing - that is the focus, not the content. Ironically, writing loses some freshness and originality or it becomes fine writing that means, really, nothing very much. It's a clutter of detail of this and that, largely void of potent conceptual content. Fortunately, there are many thinkers who write - where it is the thought that knocks the socks off and make it worth the reader's time to spend time with the material. Some can even pull that off with style.

"أدوات الكتابة" لمجموعة من المترجمين العرب، جاء هذا الكتاب مخالفا لتوقعاتي وفاقدا لروح الترجمة، قد يكون السبب كثرة الإقتباسات المنقولة والمترجمين كذلك.
إذا كان الهدف معرفة استراتيجيات هؤلاء الكُتّاب فلابأس من الإستفادة والتزود بالمهارات الكتابية، أما أن نُطبقها ككتاب عرب فالمأخذ الوحيد الذي أراه هو أن ال ٤٩ استراتيجية كُتبت في الأصل بلغتها الأم وهي الإنجليزية، فلا يمكن إسقاط أغلب قواعدها على لغتنا العربية التي بدورها تختلف تماما بتركيبها اللغوي والنحوي والبلاغي، إضافة إلى أساليبها الفنية في استخدام الجمل وصياغتها.
الذي أريد أن أخلص إليه أنه لا يصلح اعتماد اقتباسات كبار الأدباء الأجانب مع شروحاتهم وأدواتهم الضرورية أساسا إستراتيجيا للكتابة باللغة العربية، قد يتوهم البعض أن كل ماورد يمكن توظيفه في كتاباتنا، لهذا أحيل القارئ إلى بعض الكتب العربية التى قام بتأليفها عرب متخصصون في مجال فن الكتابة، على سبيل المثال:
- صناعة الكتابة وأسرار اللغة لمؤلفه سلام خياط.
- جواهر الأدب لأحمد الهاشمي
- الأسس الفنية للكتابة والتعبير لفخري النجار
من جهة أخرى أنصح الكاتب والقارئ أيضا أن يُقلل من كتب التنظير ويبدأ بممارسة الكتابة ليكتشف أسلوبه ويُطوره.
بالمناسبة يكفيك قراءة عناوين الإستراتيجيات قد تفي بالغرض وتفهم المقصود.

An outstanding book for anyone who writes or wants to be a writer. I attended two seminars put on by the author at the Tucson Festival of Books, and new immediately I had to have this book.
It's broken down into four parts...Nuts and Bolts; Special Effects; Blueprints; and Useful Habits. From the 4 subtitles, you can see it goes beyond just good grammar and proper usage. It is designed to not only help your writing, but improve your writing habits and give you new ways to think about your writing.
I found I was doing some things right, some things wrong, and somethings right that I didn't know I was doing right. As a writer who also edits for other people, this book is invaluable.
I recommend it highly, along with William Zinzer's "Writing Well," and NAtalie Goldberg's "Writing Down the Bones."

كتاب ممتاز لتتعرف على بعض الاستراتيجيات المساعدة في الكتابة أو لتتذكر تلك التي تعرفها. ولكن أي علم تتلقاه بدون تمرين سيبقى حبيس عقلك أنصحكم بالممارسة مع كل استراتيجية كتابة جديدة تتعلمونها.

ولكن الشرح مطول
والأمثلة لم تكن بالدقة المطلوبة والشرح الواضح ..
ربما لأنه بالأصل كتاب مترجم..

والأمثلة لم تكن بالدقة المطلوبة والشرح الواضح ..
ربما لأنه بالأصل كتاب مترجم..

The book does what its title suggests, meticulously presents all the tactics that are often used by professional and savvy writers. With a succinct and informative table of contents, this book can serve as a dictionary of writing, readers can locate what tactics they are interested in, explore it without reading the book cover to cover ( although the book is good enough for you to do so). Introducing from the basic knowledge of sentence structure to the board field of writers' habits, the author unveiled the mystery of writing and eased the anxiety of fellow writers step by step.
For the sake of giving examples, so many of well-known writers and their works had been introduced and quoted in this book to explain and show how to employ a particular tactic. So through this less than 300 pages book, I'd ended up being inspired by over several dozen of great writers and their works, many of which I have never heard of but could have loved. Readers who are not keen about writing tactics but having headache about what to read could get as much as use out of reading this book.
