This book was written in 1977 and I used it to train my dog when I was 10, so I wanted to re-read it. It's pretty no-nonsense and easy to follow and is still pretty up to date.

Really glad I re-read it.

I might reevaluate my rating after I adopt a dog and try some of the training techniques. Easy reading.

Vital for new dog owners. My willful little bit of fluff is the first non-yappy small dog anyone has ever seen. She does a number of tricks, does not quiver or pee nervously around new people, or anything you would expect from (let's face it) an inbred lapdog. I still recommend not just the book, but individual bits of training to people all the time. In fact, I used the Superpuppy technique in potty-training my son, and it worked in less than 24 hours!

No joke, people, this man knows from dogs.

Daniel Pinkwater is already hilarious, so just imagine him talking about puppies giving him a hard time. His methods can be a little harsh (he's not averse to saying no or yelling "Bad Dog"), but he helped us get through house training. His trick -- act like your dog won the Nobel Prize every time he pees outside. It worked.

I read this as a child before we got a puppy, and now again as an adult. Of all the dog books I'm binge-reading right now, this one is perhaps my favorite. It's concise, direct, and funny, with a clear outline of what to work on each week.

My dog training days are far behind me, but at the time, this was the best book for getting people started.

The authors really know the northern breeds best. If that's the dog you want, this is a 5-star book.
