Jill Pinkwater is an award-winning author and illustrator who has collaborated with her husband, Daniel Pinkwater, on many fine books, many of which feature polar bears and other noble creatures. They've also worked together on "Superpuppy," the world's best guide to owning and caring for a canine companion.
when i was in elementary school i checked this book out from the library and read it front-to-back enough times that my mom was like "oh my god not fucking superpuppy again" (paraphrased). i do not and have never had a dog
like to read about dogs this is a really good book for you it gives you a ton of information about the dogs and what you need in order to take care of one yourself and facts about what you need to have a puppy and recommended breeds .
This book was written in 1977 and I used it to train my dog when I was 10, so I wanted to re-read it. It's pretty no-nonsense and easy to follow and is still pretty up to date.
Vital for new dog owners. My willful little bit of fluff is the first non-yappy small dog anyone has ever seen. She does a number of tricks, does not quiver or pee nervously around new people, or anything you would expect from (let's face it) an inbred lapdog. I still recommend not just the book, but individual bits of training to people all the time. In fact, I used the Superpuppy technique in potty-training my son, and it worked in less than 24 hours!
Daniel Pinkwater is already hilarious, so just imagine him talking about puppies giving him a hard time. His methods can be a little harsh (he's not averse to saying no or yelling "Bad Dog"), but he helped us get through house training. His trick -- act like your dog won the Nobel Prize every time he pees outside. It worked.
I read this as a child before we got a puppy, and now again as an adult. Of all the dog books I'm binge-reading right now, this one is perhaps my favorite. It's concise, direct, and funny, with a clear outline of what to work on each week.
