Tootsie is one of the funniest movies ever made, provoking timeless laughs in practically every scene. You could make a case that it’s a romantic comedy, but let’s call it a comedy because the romance takes a while to develop. The high-concept story has a lot of old-time farce in it, complete with cross-dressing, quick changes, and slamming doors, but it also manages to go deeper, taking a man/woman through a believable and heart-felt transformation. By all reports, the making of this movie was as frantic as the story, with a parade of writers, last-minute changes, and a temperamental star, but somehow the final product emerged as pure comic perfection.
